Community Law Program in St. Petersburg Celebrates Pro Bono

Friday, June 30

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Sir Winston Churchill

The Community Law Program was extremely fortunate during 2005 to have such dedicated volunteers, who truly exemplify the magnificence embodied in the words of Winston Churchill. Individually and collectively, our volunteers have given of their time, talents, and finances to make their own lives and the lives of others more meaningful.

Although nothing that we could do to thank our many volunteers and supporters would be commensurate with their contributions, on April 26th, we held our Annual Meeting and Awards Reception at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, to express our appreciation. During this event, we presented several plagues and certificates of appreciation to several of our most extraordinary volunteer attorneys.

Our most prestigious award, the David L. Stout Award, was given to Attorney Garth Goodman. Garth Goodman, a then local Marital & Family Law sole practitioner, has participated in our Courthouse Legal Assistance Clinic practically every week for the past two years providing legal advice and assisting clients in the preparation of pleadings in all aspects of family law. In 2005, Garth donated a total of 96 hours of time assisting clients who would not otherwise have access to legal services. We provide family law and civil legal assistance to an average of 15 clients during this two hour clinic each week. Without Garth’s steadfast commitment of time to this clinic each week, we would not have been able to provide such a valuable and reliable service to the community. Garth was presented with this award by Sixth Circuit Chief Judge David A. Demers.

Plaques were also presented to the following attorneys:
• James R. Kennedy, Jr. – The Christina Ippolito Award for outstanding contribution in the area of Family Law
• Stephan Freeman – The Larry Hyman Volunteer Attorney Award
• Ana Maria Carnesoltas – The Newcomer Award presented to an attorney who is new to volunteering with the Community Law Program and who exemplifies a strong commitment to the program and to less economically fortunate clients
• Adam C. Shelton – The Young Lawyers Award presented to a member of the Young Lawyers Section for exceptional commitment to pro bono legal services
• Casagrande & Associates – The Law Firm Award for the collective contribution made by multiple attorneys within one firm One of the signature programs at the Community Law Program is our advice clinic program.

In addition to utilizing volunteer attorney to accept pro bono cases, the Community Law Program utilizes volunteer attorneys to staff legal advice clinics. Currently, the Community Law Program operates 27 regularly scheduled subject specific advice clinics each month.

To recognize several of our volunteer attorneys who regularly participate in these advice clinics, we presented the following individuals with Certificates of Appreciation:
• Carolyn R. Chaney – Bankruptcy Clinic
• Patricia M. Lee – Courthouse Legal Assistance Clinic
• Osei Prempeh – Divorce Forms Class
• Mary F. Selter – Elder Law Clinic

• Patricia Hastings & Bryan Albers – Housing Clinic
• Donna Lonsberry – Pro Se Clinic
