The Miami firm Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton was honored Thursday as one of state’s top providers of pro bono services.
The Florida Supreme Court annually honors a single law firm in the state and one lawyer in each of the Florida’s 20 judicial circuits for significant contributions of free legal services to needy groups or individuals. In addition to Florida attorneys, a lawyer from outside the state is honored.
This year’s award recipients were recognized during ceremonies at the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee.
According to the high court, Kozyak Tropin lawyers were instrumental in reviving the mentoring program for minority law students at the University of Miami. The program’s name was changed to the John W. Kozyak Minority Mentoring Program, after one of the firm’s partners.
Firm attorneys also provide extensive pro bono legal services through the Dade County Bar Association.
Founded 21 years ago, Kozyak Tropin has 18 attorneys and focuses its practice in the area of complex commercial contract and tort litigation, bankruptcy, class actions and securities fraud.
South Florida lawyers receiving The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for individual pro bono service were: Robert C. Meyer in the 11th Circuit, Joseph N. Nusbaum in the 15th Circuit and Nancy W. Gregoire in the 17th Circuit.
Meyer, a solo practitioner in Miami, has been involved with the Put Something Back program of the Dade County Bar Association. He has provided more than 500 hours of pro bono assistance in numerous cases over the past several years.
Nusbaum, a partner at Brotman Nusbaum and Fox in Boca Raton, volunteers at the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County.
Gregoire, a partner at Bunnell Woulfe Kirschbaum Keller McIntyre & Gregoire in Fort Lauderdale, has donated hundreds of hours to pro bono representation over her career through the court system, the guardian ad litem child advocacy program, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Ministry of St. Andrew Parish.
